For many, Halloween is one of the best parts of the year. It is a lot of fun to dress up, buy spooky decorations, and eat Halloween treats. However, buying a new costume each year and handing out candies wrapped in plastic can turn Halloween into a very wasteful holiday. Thankfully, it is easy (and often cheaper) to have a Green Halloween!
Design Your Own Costume
Thrifting parts of your costume, trading clothing with friends, or styling things you already own are perfect ways to create a sustainable Halloween costume. Visit thrift stores like the Salvation Army, Buffalo Exchange, and the Red White & Blue Thrift Store to find low-cost secondhand costume pieces. Upcycling everyday clothing is another way to go. There are plenty of beginner friendly ways to transform old clothes into costumes. Fabric paint, a pair of scissors and glue can completely change an outfit. You'll have fun being creative with the costume design and will end up with a costume that is unique!
Sustainable Halloween Treats
When buying candy to hand out this Halloween, choose candies that come in recyclable or biodegradable wrapping. Snacks in paper packaging are always a better choice than those wrapped in plastic. Consider other snack options, like fresh fruit. Oranges are a great option because they are completely biodegradable and you can draw jack-o-lantern faces on them in the spirit of the season!
