Message from Patrick J. Norton, Senior Vice President & COO
Good Morning,
As we prepare to go into Winter Break, I wanted to make you aware of some important facility announcements on the uptown campus.
WINTER SET-BACK PROGRAM
Effective December 23, 2018 through January 2, 2019, Tulane University will once again implement its annual winter set-back program. This is important both financially and sustainably, as research has shown building energy use is responsible for 70% of the university's carbon emissions.
Starting at 6:00 a.m. on December 23, Facilities Services staff will start turning down air handlers to save energy and money. The temperature in most of the office and classroom environments will be allowed to fluctuate between 62 and 82 degrees before the ventilation system will be activated. Facilities Services staff will ensure building heating and cooling systems are re-activated and back on their normal schedule before the start of business on January 2. Faculty or staff who plan to work during the winter break are encouraged to wear appropriate warm clothing. The use of space heaters is not permitted without prior approval from OEHS and Facilities Services.
Special purpose buildings, labs, and libraries that require temperatures to remain steady during the break and cannot handle significant changes in temperatures will not be set back. Departments that require exemption from the set-back program must submit a request to Rickie Kramer at rkramer@tulane.edu. For more information about the winter set-back process, please contact Rickie Kramer, (504) 865-5282.
In addition to these set-back actions, we ask that you turn off lights in your office and in common areas such as conference rooms, bathrooms, and kitchenettes. We also ask that you turn off all personal computer equipment and electronics and unplug all energy-consuming appliances and devices.
The downtown campus buildings are exempt from the winter set-back program and will operate on their normal schedule. This information is being provided to the downtown community so that faculty and staff moving between the two campuses during Winter Break are aware of the conditions.
